The Mughal Emperor Akbar is well known for his religious tolerance: He abolished the Jizya tax on non-Muslims, allowed forced converts to re-convert and invited priests of different faiths to discuss their religious beliefs. He even lectured the Persian Shah ‘Abbas and the Spanish king Philip II on the values of tolerance.

‘Formerly I persecuted men into conformity with my faith and deemed it to be Islam. As I grew in knowledge, I was overwhelmed with shame.’
– Akbar the Great

What is Agnostic Christianity

Last Updated: April 20, 2024

Agnostic Christianity presents a unique perspective within the realm of religious thought, blending elements of both faith and skepticism. While acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding the existence of a divine being, many agnostics embrace the ethical teachings and cultural traditions associated with Christianity and other faiths, including the Abrahamic faiths of Judaism and Islam. But we also want to include people who trueIy embrace their religion and really believe in their faith. We do not disparage the agnostic, or the true believer. In fact, we would like to bring everyone together to discuss and share their faith without disparaging the faith of others. In fact, Agnostic Christianity doesn’t require anyone to be agnostic or Christian, but only tolerance for those who believe differently from ourselves and treat each other with respect. Agnostic Christianity chose that name because the founder believes in Jesus, the man, but was rather agnostic regarding the existence of God or a higher power, which he describes in his personal “witness” as a Christian. Hence, the name: Agnostic Christianity. You can call yourselves anything you want to be called with all the protocol of respect your faith expects. Respect for the beliefs of others is important in Agnostic Christianity.

“Agnostic Christianity” grants respect towards individuals and grapples with questions of faith and doubt, often finding solace in the search for meaning rather than absolute certainty, but if one has faith in certainty, then please respect the certainty and/or  doubts of others. This approach encourages critical thinking and open-mindedness, inviting believers to explore their spirituality without feeling constrained by dogma or rigid beliefs while at the same time, providing some comfort, if desired, by having those of a different faith address your deity or prophets with all the respect due them. Brevity is appreciated if possible. But learning to respect other faiths is, in itself, a discipline we could all practice.

While some may see agnostic Christianity as a paradoxical concept, proponents argue that it offers a bridge between religious tradition and modern skepticism. By acknowledging the limitations of human understanding, adherents of this philosophy strive to cultivate a deeper, more nuanced relationship with the divine, free from the constraints of rigid doctrine. Agnostic Christians often find inspiration in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, viewing him as a moral exemplar and guide for living a compassionate and meaningful life. Agnostic Muslims may often find inspiration in the life and teachings of Mohammed and the Quran, viewing him as a moral exemplar and guide for living a compassionate and meaningful life, while adding cultural identification with Arab culture. Agnostic Jews often attend Synagogue simply to identify with their Judaic heritage. And some are just true believers. All are welcome to discuss their beliefs in a respectful manner. Hindus are a great example of Agnostic Christianity in their acceptance of a multitude of gods and sacred texts and simply sticking with their traditions. They may draw wisdom from sacred texts, interpreting them through the lens of uncertainty and existential inquiry or taking them literally, as I do with The Bible.

Ultimately, Agnostic Christianity fosters a sense of humility and openness to the mysteries of existence, encouraging believers to embrace the journey of spiritual exploration with curiosity and reverence. It invites individuals to engage in a continuous dialogue with the divine, seeking truth and understanding while embracing the complexities of the human experience.

                                About our Website: Agnostic-Christianity.com

The "spirit" of our website: Agnostic-Christianity.com is essentially the "spirit" of Akbar the Great (see the top of this page regarding Akbar the Great) where we want an open, respectful forum to share our religious, political and cultural values with others while learning to understand the  religious, political and cultural values of others.

Agnostic-Christianity.com is an open forum. It does benefit you to sign in and identify yourself but if you want to remain anonymous, you can sign in and log-in with anonymous login or simply navigate and post without signing in. We want honesty and sources for your thoughts are welcome if that helps explain where you got that thought or idea or explains the thought or idea.  But we don’t want deceptive baloney or free advertising. We have advertisers that hopefully sign up to be advertisers for that. So your post will get purged if that’s what you’re trying to do. Charitable advertising or advertising to promote special events advancing our cause can be tolerated in a special section. But it’s not set up yet.

Agnostic-Christianity.com is initially set up with some articles that have been published in the past and are classified as 2024 articles or 2023 articles and prior. You can comment directly to the article or, hopefully, use the article to comment on the broader Topics of Interest already set up for discussion. Initially we’ll use 8 articles from 2024 and 5 articles from 2023 and prior. These will page forward and backward within their “Year” categories and comments on each individual article are permitted and stars recorded.

However, we also include a button that will directly link to topics that are pre-setup as “Topics of Interest” in The Forum under the heading: Responses to Articles. For example: The 3 articles from 2023 and Prior: 1) Abortion and the Bible, 2) Easter Sermon, 3) Additional Information on Abortion and The Bible  as well as well as Easter Sermon 2024 from 2024 Articles all link to a discussion called: Facts and Misconceptions From The Bible. Currently, we have 6 “Topics of Interest”:  1) Facts and Misconceptions in the Bible. 2) Crime and Punishment: Vengeance or Deterrent? 3) Propaganda and Its Effect on Society 4) Interfaith Communication and Fellowship in the Tri-Valley 5). Interfaith Communication and Fellowship in America and 6) Fascism: What It Is and Isn't. As featured articles are published from our Home Page, we will link to the broader topic when the article is published. This feature is intended to create discussion among the users of our web site to promote understanding, ask questions, get answers and engage in Agnostic Christianity. Please use it often and please use it respectfully.

For General Discussion, we also have an open forum with little restriction, so it could get chaotic if we get enough contributing users. You could treat it like Next Door, if you want, but with far less restrictions. We also have an about Glenn White, the founder of Agnostic Christianity and the person who set up this site from the Home Page. We also have a Featured Article from the Home Page

Other than that, that’s all we have for now. So please login and use the site with respect and the openness it provides to you and, also, expects from you. You can view our Privacy Policy by clicking on the Privacy button in the tool bar.
